13/05/2010 - Somerset Review of Services
People with a loss of sight or hearing in Somerset are being urged to take part in a review of the services available to them.
There are about 1,300 people registered deaf or hard of hearing in the county, 3,000 as having sight loss and nearly 500 with loss of both senses. It is estimated there are thousands more in the area who are not registered or receiving support. Somerset County Council will use the review to develop future services.
Julie Shorrock, the council's project manager for sensory loss, said: "We want to hear from as many people as possible, not only those who have recently received support or treatment, but also the many people who may never have sought help before."
Five public meetings will be held by Peter Fletcher Associates who are conducting the review. These will take place in:
- Shepton Mallet, Wednesday 5 May, 10am-12.30pm at Pilton Village Hall.
- Yeovil, Monday 10 May, 10am-12.30pm, NHS Somerset, Wynford House, Lufton Way.
- Minehead, Tuesday 11 May, 10am-12.30pm, at "Jack's", Butlins Resort.
- Bridgwater, Wednesday 12 May, 2pm-4.30pm, at Victoria Park Community Centre.
- Taunton, Tuesday 18 May, 10am-12.30pm at Compass Disability, the Belvedere Trading Estate
