13/07/2010 - Youngsters Entertain Candlelight Clients
Young people from Millfield School gave up their free time to perform for about 50 people at a music and tea concert at Street Parish Church.
The audience included clients of Candlelight Homecare Services who enjoyed listening to solo performances on saxophone, viola, cello, tuba and piano as well as singing.
This was the first outing for a new initiative called Candlelight Community, which was formed after an extensive survey to assess the needs and wishes of elderly, disabled and housebound people.
The enthusiastic response to the survey showed that people were keen to support it and with over 21 years' experience of helping people in their own homes, Candlelight now organises social activities to help people get out, make new friends and have fun.
Liz Kirkham, Candlelight's managing director said: 'It is something we have been planning for some time and we have given it a lot of thought. We recognise how difficult it can be for people who are housebound for whatever reason to get out, have more company and the chance to make new friends. We wanted to extend our homecare services to include social activities as well and were delighted to have such a positive response to our survey.'
Candlelight Community, which is being run on a not-for-profit basis, will organise social events, activities and outings and will take care of all the details such as transport, venues and meals and provide staff to assist if required. Friends and family members of the participants will be welcome to join in the activities as well.
Candlelight Homecare Services has its headquarters in Glastonbury and operates across Bath and North East Somerset, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and East Sussex.
